All donations received would be given to Common Ground (Adelaide Dental School’s Community Outreach Dental Program). This Program allows dental and oral health students to improve the lives of the marginalised and vulnerable people in our community.

Nearly half of the world’s population (45%) suffer from oral health conditions, with about 2.5 billion people being affected by untreated dental caries (decay) (WHO, 2022). It pains me to inform you that despite it being a largely preventable dental condition, caries is unfortunately the most prevalent disease globally in both children and adults.

It is a known fact that general and oral health are closely related. My favourite speciality (for now) in Dentistry has to be Periodontics. This is a fascinating specialty that delves into issues relating to gums and the periodontium (supporting tooth structures). Did you know that medical conditions such as diabetes and osteoarthritis have a bi-directional relationship with periodontitis (inflammation of the periodontium)? And that untreated periodontitis can lead to tooth loss?

As someone who loves to eat, I find it devasting to know that someone out there would be unable to enjoy the food they love just because of oral health conditions like caries and periodontitis, which are most certainly preventable in a dental setting.

I know times are hard, and some of us just don’t have the financial means to donate. That’s okay. But for those who can, wouldn’t it be amazing to be a part of this? You definitely can! Just donate the $5 that you were thinking of spending on coffee today to this worthy cause! Any amount is good, and no amount is ever too little.
